Winter Highlights – 2011/2012
Whatever your interests whether skiing, snowshoeing, cross-country, culture, get-togethers big or small, VC 50 provides opportunities. Let’s review the events of this winter’s season. Many of our activities were filled to capacity making early reservations imperative.
We dusted our snowshoes off early and went to the Tennessee Pass Cookhouse where a sumptuous lunch was served to a full house, chaired by Abby Dixon. The following day, Judy Carson organized the kick-off Après Ski party at the Colorado Ski Museum. Over 100 members met and drank beer, wine and munched hors d’oeuvres, enjoying old friends and making new while planning for the upcoming season. Bruce Williams organized the popular trip to Snowmass, which gave about 50 members an opportunity to ski or snowshoe at a venue different than our incredible local sites.
The Holiday Gala, adeptly planned by Sharri Rozelle, was held at the Beaver Creek Park Hyatt where almost 200 members, dressed in their holiday best, dined and danced to the band, Soiree, a high-energy dance band, with a full rhythm section and two dynamic front singers who are recording artists.
The New Year was off to a good start on a sunny, but cold day with a brunch at Balata’s Restaurant hosted by Abby Dixon. New members had a chance to meet the board and each other for cocktails in January in an event hosted by our President Dale Mosier. An annual excursion to Winter Park’s Arlberg Club, thanks to Marlene Kearney, was a much-appreciated interlude for those who participated. A cultural event headed by Marcia McCalden at the Vilar Center for the Performing Arts featured The Europa Galante that played Baroque favorites on period instruments.
The Super Bowl Party at Gore Creek Brewery, with excellent food and service, brought cheers from both Giants and Patriots fans with exciting plays down to the last seconds. Thanks to Judd Babcock and Paul Chapman for their enthusiastic attention to detail.
For Valentine’s Day, we had a capacity crowd at the Brush Creek Pavilion for dinner and theater where we saw the musical comedy “I Love You You’re Perfect, Now Change” presented by the Porchlight Players and hosted by Leila White.
Movie Night, a new program addition headed by Lynn Anderson, was held at various homes with a viewing and discussion of a movie. A Wine and Dine evening at various homes, some of which had meals with specific cuisines, allowed members a chance to eat marvelous dishes and get to know each other in a smaller setting.
The Ski Treasure Hunt headed by Jeanne Mosier kept the contestants guessing as they skied from clue to clue. Bowling headed by Lois Bruce introduced members to Bol at Solaris and caused quite a friendly competition between teams. Our popular square dancing evening, thanks to Ed Doogan, was loads of fun with a caller who helped beginners feel comfortable while learning the steps.
Members had a chance to view the new Walking Mountains facility with a tour and reception. A series of opportunities to learn new artistic skills with clay, brush, wire and beads, and glass etching headed by Jennifer Cakir resulted in small enthusiastic groups. And just in case none of those activities tickled your fancy, there was Mah-Jong, headed by Pat Bain, quilting organized by Pam Starr, and knitting groups arranged by Melanie Richmond. Thanks to all the chairpersons who did a fabulous job. We couldn’t have the club without you.
